Turkish police used force and tear gas to raid the premises of the Zaman Today newspaper, blocking journalists and editors from performing their duties, reports the BH News Agency Patria.
Employees say that media freedom cannot be silenced. Police dispersed crowds gathered in front of the newspaper's headquarters for hours, using tear gas and water cannons.
Journalists from the newspaper were not allowed to use mobile phones, and one of the editors said she would sue the police when the rule of law is restored in Turkey.
Condemnations of the repression by Turkish authorities and police are coming from all sides, and the White House announced that the takeover of the Zaman newspaper is problematic.
Zaman daily and Today's Zaman are close to the Hizmet movement and its founder Fethullah Gulen, who is an opponent of the regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
