Police surround German city of Chemnitz following bomb threat

In the German city of Chemnitz, police have cordoned off a residential building due to threats that explosive devices are located in an apartment, as reported by Die Welt.

Armed police surrounded the building due to the possibility of, as they say, a dangerous threat. Nearby roads are being closed, and an evacuation is underway.

Police used force to enter the building and said on Twitter:

- The explosion that was heard was a measure for police entry into the building - Reuters reports.

Police asked citizens to remain in their homes.  

- There was a suspicion that an attack with explosives was being prepared - said a spokeswoman for the criminal police from Dresden, as reported by Die Welt.

The building was evacuated, and police searched one apartment. Police caused an explosion when entering the apartment. The suspect was not there.

Police advised on Twitter to avoid the cordoned-off area of the city in a wide arc.
