Sarajevo residents will tomorrow mark the 24th anniversary of the start of the Serbian army's attack on the city. The first attack on Sarajevo began on April 5, 1992. It was followed by a siege lasting 1,425 days, during which the army of Republika Srpska, supported by formations from neighboring Serbia, killed more than 11,500 people, including 1,600 children, writes Patria agency.
On that April 5, 1992, the citizens of Sarajevo took to the streets. These were some of the largest demonstrations in BiH, where citizens demanded peace.
A JNA (Yugoslav People's Army) plane, breaking the sound barrier, flew over the gathered people, thus frightening the demonstrators. Brave Sarajevans, unarmed, headed across the bridge, towards the Kovačići neighborhood, to stop the aggressor who was shooting at the city.
The Serbian army opened fire on the gathered crowd. Suada Dilberović and Olga Sučić were killed at Vrbanja Bridge.
