(Patria) - Although companies like Google and Microsoft are moving towards a future without passwords, where we will access emails, social networks, and various online services in other ways, such as using biometrics, currently for most everyday services we use on the internet, entering a password is indispensable.
While security experts warn that one must be very careful when choosing passwords, meaning one should try and create the most complicated password possible so that hackers do not easily break into your accounts and profiles, many are quite lazy and use simple words or number combinations that are easy to remember, but whose protection is even easier to break. Also, using two-factor authentication is recommended, which is an additional layer of security for accessing online profiles and accounts, which some also avoid.
The company NordPass this week, according to the daily.hr, published a list of the most common passwords for 2023, and such passwords are also the most dangerous because hackers can easily and quickly crack them using available tools.
Among the top 10 such most common, and at the same time worst passwords, are already well-known phrases, or number combinations that end up on such lists every year.
The first and almost always the most popular password on this list is - 123456, followed by admin and then again two simple sequences of numbers - 12345678 and 123456789. In fifth place is 1234, then 12345, while in seventh place is password. The last three places on the top 10 list are also passwords made of numbers and one combination of numbers and letters - 123, Aa123456 and 1234567890.
NordPass states that it takes hackers less than a second to crack all these passwords.
This company's list of most frequently used passwords includes as many as 200 passwords, and most of them are quite simple and hackers can crack them quickly, but there are exceptions. Among the top 100 passwords, we can highlight at 20th place the password Eliska81, which NordPass says takes three hours to crack, at 47th place is admin@123, which takes one hour to crack, at 54th place is admintelecom, for which hackers need to work for 23 days, then at 56th place 123meklozed (12 days), at 71st place is Aa123456@ (3 hours), etc.
For those for whom using such complicated passwords for numerous different accounts and profiles is complicated and they are too lazy to remember and write them down, there is a solution - password managers, i.e., password management programs like 1Password, or for users of Apple devices, the Keychain application is available.
