SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The trial in the second impeachment process against former US President Donald Trump begins today in the US Congress Senate under an accelerated procedure, reports the BBC.
The former president is accused of inciting rebellion during his address to supporters before the riots in the US Congress building in Washington on January 6.
Members of the Democratic Party claim to possess irrefutable evidence of Trump's guilt, while his defense team claims that the participants in the attack on the Capitol acted independently.
The defense team called the trial "absurd and unconstitutional," and today the focus will be on its legality.
Trump is the only president in US history to have been impeached twice, and only one of three to have had the procedure initiated at least once.
If found guilty, Trump could be banned from running for president again in the US elections.
However, for Trump to be convicted, two-thirds of the total 100 senators must support such a decision. Democrats have 50 senators in the Senate, and it is unlikely that enough members of the Republican Party will agree to find Trump guilty.
Trump's legal team announced yesterday that the trial is unconstitutional because he is no longer the President of the United States.
If the constitutional vote passes, which is expected, opening statements will begin tomorrow afternoon.
The debate is expected to last until Sunday, February 14, and a verdict is not expected before Monday, February 15.
