Trump impeachment process begins: Republicans hold the majority

(Patria) - The US Senate, where Republicans hold the majority, rejected attempts by Democrats to compel the White House to submit documents related to the disbursement of military aid to Ukraine, reports Voice of America (VOA). The Senate made this decision yesterday, during the first day of the impeachment trial of US President Donald Trump.

At the start of the impeachment trial, the US President was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The first obligation of the Senate, led by Republicans, was to vote on the timeframe and rules of the entire process – as proposed by Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Senate Republicans.

According to the resolution proposed by McConnell, Democratic representatives, who act as prosecutors in the impeachment process, as well as the President's legal team, will each have twenty-four hours over the next three days to present their view of the case, VOA reports.

The Republican majority in the Senate rejected the first three proposed amendments by the Democrats at the beginning of Trump's impeachment trial, indicating how this process might unfold and what the final outcome will be.
