Arrests Begin for Those Responsible for the Death of 71 Migrants

The 7.5-ton truck was registered in Hungary, and according to the advertising logo on its body, it belonged to a Slovak poultry sales company, reports the Patria news agency.

At least seven people have been arrested in connection with the death of 71 migrants in a truck on an Austrian highway, the Vienna daily Kronen Zeitung reports.

According to the results of an extensive police investigation, the refrigerated truck of 7.5 tons left Budapest early on Wednesday morning, and around nine in the morning it was at the Hungarian-Austrian border, which it crossed during the night.

On Thursday between five and six in the morning, the truck was left in the emergency lane on the A4 highway near the Austrian town of Parndorf. The driver, a Romanian national, most likely fled to Hungary.

More than 70 bodies of migrants were pulled from an abandoned truck found on a highway in eastern Austria, near Hungary and Slovakia, said Alexander Marakovits, a spokesman for the Austrian Interior Ministry, on Friday.
