(Patria) - The "Ryugyong" Hotel, also known as the "hotel of doom", is located in the North Korean capital Pyongyang and has been dubbed the ugliest in the world.
The foundations of this huge building, in which 700 million euros were invested, were laid in 1987, but no one has stayed overnight in it to this day.
The hotel was supposed to open in 1989 for the World Festival of Youth and Students and thus win the record for the tallest building in the world, but that never happened.
North Korea experienced an economic collapse after investing huge sums of money in building a new stadium and expanding the airport.
The skeleton of the building was completed in 1992, when work stopped. After 16 years, the bare concrete structure was covered with glass and metal panels, and this undertaking cost 167 million euros, reports Index.
The German luxury hotel chain Kempinski publicly announced its involvement in the hotel's management and announced a grand opening in 2013.
Just a few months later, they abandoned the project, after which rumors spread that the building was unsafe inside.
One of the few people allowed to visit the hotel is Simon Cockerell, director of a travel agency from Beijing, who found a bare and unfinished concrete infrastructure in 2012.
"It took us a long time to get to the 99th floor by elevator, because there is only a construction elevator, not a modern one with all the buttons," he explained.
The hotel is 330 meters high and was supposed to contain more than 3,000 rooms and five revolving restaurants at the top, offering a view of the entire city.
36 years have passed since the start of construction, but it still has not received a single guest.
