(Patria) - The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is "catastrophic", five United Nations agencies announced on Saturday, calling for greater international assistance as conditions worsen in the densely populated coastal enclave, AFP reported.
Their statement came as Israel said it would intensify its strikes in Gaza to increase pressure on Hamas, and its senior officers warned troops to be ready to enter the besieged Palestinian territory.
The statement by UN agencies followed the arrival of the first aid trucks from Egypt to Gaza on Saturday.
"More than 1.6 million people in Gaza critically need humanitarian assistance," said the agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, the children's agency. "Children, pregnant women and the elderly remain the most vulnerable. Almost half of Gaza's population are children," it added.
"The humanitarian situation in Gaza was desperate before the latest hostilities," they said. "Now it is catastrophic. The world must do more."
The other three agencies that signed the statement are the World Food Programme, the development agency UNDP, and UNFPA, the population fund.
