Peruvian court protects President Boluarte from criminal investigations until end of her term

(Patria) - Peru's Constitutional Court has suspended the investigation against President Dina Boluarte until the end of her term in July next year, according to a ruling published on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Boluarte has been under investigation for her role in the deaths of dozens of protesters after she came to power at the end of 2022 and for alleged illicit enrichment during her term, which is set to end on July 28, 2026.

The highly unpopular president also faced an investigation for abandoning her post after undergoing rhinoplasty without notifying Congress that she would temporarily hand over her duties as head of state. Boluarte has denied all accusations.

In its ruling, the Constitutional Court decided to accept a complaint filed by the executive branch against the prosecutor's office and the judiciary, ordering that the investigations be suspended until the end of the president's term.

Peru has gone through a period of significant political turmoil, with six presidents in the last seven years.
