(Patria) - The Pentagon has concluded that Alibaba Group Holding, Baidu Inc, and BYD should be added to the list of companies aiding the Chinese military, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, Reuters reported last night.
Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg informed lawmakers of the conclusion in a letter on October 7, three weeks before Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping agreed to a broad trade truce, the report stated.
It was not immediately clear whether the companies have been added to the Pentagon's list of Chinese military companies 1260H that are considered to be linked to the military but operate in the US, Bloomberg reported.
While the designation does not include immediate sanctions, it can be a blow to the reputation of the affected companies and serves as a stark warning to American entities and firms about the risks of doing business with them.
Feinberg said that these three companies and five others - Eoptolink Technology Inc, Hua Hong Semiconductor Ltd, RoboSense Technology Co, WuXi AppTec Co, and Zhongji Innolight Co - deserve to be included on the 1260H list, according to the report.
The Pentagon, Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD did not respond to Reuters' request for comments on the report.
The annually updated list of Chinese military companies, which is formally prescribed by US law as the "Section 1260H list," included 134 companies in its latest update in January, including Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings and battery maker CATL.
