Pentagon: We are in contact with Beijing regarding the arrangement of military communication

(Patria) - The United States is coordinating with Beijing to arrange military talks, the Pentagon said on Tuesday, although it had no announcements about any negotiations, Reuters reports.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed last month at a summit in California to resume such contacts, which were interrupted after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August 2022.

"We have been working closely with our defense attaché's office and our political team has been in active coordination with Beijing to arrange communication," said Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder at a press conference.

"But again, there is nothing to announce at this time," he added, in terms of any concrete engagements.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday that he believes progress in communication between the two militaries is on the right track since the Biden-Xi summit took place.

"I don't really think of it as a delay. I think this is just a normal implementation of the summit's outcomes and it's proceeding as both sides expected, so I don't see any problem there," Sullivan said.

The Biden administration has said it wants communication through the two countries' militaries, including higher leaders and commanders in specific geographic areas.
