Pentagon: We need about 60 days to establish a temporary port in Gaza

(Patria) - The implementation of the American plan to establish a temporary port for aid delivery to Gaza will take up to 60 days and will likely involve more than 1,000 American personnel, the Pentagon announced.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced the plan the previous night during his State of the Union address, in which he pleaded with Israel to allow more aid into the blockaded territory, while defending the military operation against Hamas, AFP reported.

Israel's delay in delivering aid by land has also led the United States to join other countries in dropping aid by air.

- The United States will establish a temporary maritime pier offshore that will enable ships to transfer cargo to smaller vessels for transport and unloading of cargo onto a temporary causeway for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

We anticipate that it will take over 1,000 U.S. forces to participate in the construction of the facility and up to 60 days to deploy forces and build the causeway and pier, said Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder.

Once established, the new facility could provide more than two million meals to Gaza's citizens daily, he said, adding that there will be no U.S. forces on the ground in Gaza and that Washington will work with regional partners.
