(Patria) - U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin confirmed Washington's unwavering support for Ukraine in a conversation with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, the Pentagon announced late Tuesday, Reuters reported.
It was the first conversation between the defense chiefs since U.S. President Joe Biden announced he was ending his candidacy and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination.
"During the call, the Secretary reaffirmed the United States' unwavering support for Ukraine as it confronts Russian aggression," Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters at a briefing.
Umerov said he and Austin discussed recent developments on the front line and Ukraine's urgent battlefield needs.
"I once again emphasized the importance and urgency of lifting restrictions on the use of long-range weapons," Umerov said in a statement on social media platform X.
Washington, under Biden, has been Ukraine's biggest supporter in the war Russia is waging against its neighbor. The U.S. has provided more than fifty billion dollars in military aid since 2022.
Following a call between Kamala Harris's national security advisor and his chief of staff on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was important that "the dynamics of our joint work for a just peace do not decrease."
