Beijing: Iran is capable of handling the situation and sparing the Middle East greater tensions

(Patria) - China believes that Iran could "handle the situation and spare the region further turmoil" while preserving its sovereignty and dignity, referring to the attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria and its retaliatory strike on Israel over the weekend, Reuters reported.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a phone call on Monday that China appreciates Iran's emphasis on not targeting regional and neighboring countries, according to the official Xinhua news agency on Tuesday.

Wang said he noted that Iran described its actions as limited and carried out in self-defense. China strongly condemns and firmly opposes the attack on the embassy, calling the incident "unacceptable," Wang said.

Amir-Abdollahian told Wang that Iran is aware of regional tensions, is ready for restraint, and has no intention of further escalation. Tensions are high in the Middle East as the Israeli military has promised a response to the Iranian attack, and several countries have called for restraint.

Wang also spoke with the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia on the same day, Xinhua reported, stating that China is ready to work with Riyadh to avoid further escalation in the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said Riyadh "greatly expects" China to play an active and important role in this regard, and that his country is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China to promote an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. Faisal said Saudi Arabia "fully trusts" China and is ready to advocate for the sustainable development of bilateral cooperation, Xinhua reported.
