Pedro Sánchez is old/new Prime Minister of Spain

(Patria) - The Spanish parliament today re-elected the current Prime Minister, socialist Pedro Sánchez, as head of the new Government.

Sánchez, leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), received the support of 179 out of 350 deputies in the lower house of parliament, while representatives of the right-wing opposition voted against his election.

The vote on Sánchez's election followed a two-day debate among party leaders, which centered on a controversial amnesty agreement for Catalan separatists, to which the PSOE leader agreed in order to gain the support of Catalan parties to form a new Government.

Sánchez, Prime Minister since June 2018, secured the support of six smaller parties to form another minority coalition government with the left-wing coalition Sumar.

In the parliamentary elections on July 23, no list won a majority of votes. The conservative People's Party, which ruled Spain until 2018, came in first place, but could not form a government because it had a total of 170 deputies with the right-wing party Vox.

Sánchez's socialists, who came second in the elections with 121 deputies, managed to form a majority of 179 deputies through a series of agreements with left-wing and Catalan parties.
