Pope Leo XIV calls for ceasefire and expresses support for the people of Gaza

(Patria) - Pope Leo XIV expressed his deepest condolences to the people of Gaza following the recent offensive launched by Israel and reiterated his call for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

The Pope emphasized the need for finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis and full respect for international humanitarian law.

"I express my deepest condolences to the Palestinian people in Gaza, who continue to live in fear and survive in unacceptable conditions, forced, once again, to leave their land," said Pope Leo XIV.

Israeli forces launched a massive new military offensive on Tuesday against Gaza's most populous center, Gaza City, ordering civilians to leave the city amid the most intense bombing they have faced in nearly two years of war.

"Every person always has an inviolable dignity that must be respected and protected," the Pope added.

The Israeli army has intensified actions to further displace Palestinians and occupy the largest urban center in the territory.

The army had previously announced the expansion of the operation as well as a complete siege of Gaza.

It is estimated that 400,000 people have left Gaza. More than 60,000 people have been killed during the two-year aggression.
