Pope Leo XIV calls for just and lasting peace in Ukraine

(Patria) - In his first Sunday blessing from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, after being elected Pope this week, Leo XIV called for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, as well as an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, with the release of hostages and delivery of humanitarian aid, reports AP.

"Never again war!", Pope Leo said from the balcony of the basilica, to the loud approval of the gathered faithful.

Recalling the end of World War II 80 years ago, the Pope quoted his predecessor Pope Francis, warning that today's world is experiencing a "third world war in pieces", pointing to the large number of active conflicts.

Leo XIV, the first Pope from the United States, also remembered Mother's Day in his speech, which is celebrated in many countries, sending congratulations to all mothers – "including those in heaven".
