Pope Leo Visits Turkey: Meeting with Erdogan

(Patria) - Pope Leo has arrived in Turkey, a country he chose for his first trip outside of Italy.

He was welcomed by numerous cardinals at the airport and held a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In Ankara, he also visited the mausoleum of the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, after which he is expected to travel to Istanbul in the evening.

During his stay in Turkey, it has been announced that the Pope will call for peace in the Middle East and emphasize the importance of rapprochement among long-divided Christian churches.

He chose Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country, also because of its historical significance – the visit is part of the commemoration of 1700 years since the early church council where the Nicene Creed, still used by most Christians today, was formulated.

In addition to the meeting with Erdogan, meetings with civil society representatives, diplomats, and the head of Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs are also planned.
