Pope Leo: The world is being destroyed by a handful of tyrants, billions are spent on killing and destruction

(Patria) - Pope Leo XIV criticized world leaders who spend billions on wars, stating that the world "is being destroyed by a handful of tyrants". Pope Leo, the first American pope in history, made these sharp remarks during a visit to Cameroon, after being attacked on social media by US President Donald Trump.

The Pope also condemned leaders who use religious rhetoric to justify wars and called for a "decisive change of direction".

"The lords of war pretend not to know that a moment is enough for destruction, while a whole life is often not enough for rebuilding," he said.

"They turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing and destruction, while the funds needed for healing, education, and reconstruction are nowhere to be found."

The Pope's statements followed new remarks by Donald Trump, who said the Pope "should get with the program" and called him "very weak". In his latest comments, however, the Pope did not name any specific leader.

Let us recall that Trump fiercely attacked Pope Leo XIV in recent days on the social network Truth Social.

"He is not good at his job... he is weak on crime and terrible for foreign policy," he wrote, adding: "I don't want a Pope who thinks it's okay for Iran to have nuclear weapons. I don't want a Pope who thinks it's terrible that America attacked Venezuela..."
