Pope Francis called for the return of refugees to Syria

VATICAN, (Patria) - Pope Francis called during his annual meeting with diplomats on Monday for the continuation of peace initiatives in Syria to enable the return of numerous Syrian refugees and reiterated his commitment to preserving the status quo of Jerusalem.

- It is important to continue, in a constructive atmosphere of increased trust between the parties, with the various ongoing peace initiatives for the benefit of Syria - the Pope emphasized, mentioning "the long conflict that has affected the country and caused terrible suffering".

Within the framework of the social life reconstruction in the country, "it is of vital importance to protect religious minorities, among whom are Christians who have been actively contributing to the history of Syria for centuries", he emphasized, reports Hina.

- It is also important that the numerous refugees who have found shelter in neighboring countries, particularly in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, can return to their homeland - the Pope continued, acknowledging "the efforts made by these countries".

He also reiterated the recent tension that arose after the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, while both Israelis and Palestinians claim the city.

Expressing "sorrow for those who lost their lives in recent conflicts", he called for respect for the "status quo of Jerusalem, a holy city for Christians, Jews, and Muslims".

Reiterating the appeal already made in his Christmas message, Francis emphasized the importance of "supporting every initiative for dialogue on the Korean Peninsula in order to find new ways to overcome current obstacles, increase mutual trust, and guarantee a future of peace for the Korean people and the entire world".
