(Patria) - Pope Francis is being treated for a "complex clinical situation" and will remain in hospital for as long as necessary, the Vatican announced.
The 88-year-old was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital on Friday for treatment and tests for bronchitis.
In an update on Monday, the Vatican said the Pope had a "polymicrobial infection" of the respiratory tract, requiring a change in treatment.
Before his admission last week, the Pope had symptoms of bronchitis for several days and delegated officials to read prepared speeches at events.
Over the weekend, the Vatican said the Pope's condition was stable and he had been told to "rest completely" to facilitate recovery.
He was unable to hold his regular weekly prayer on Sunday in St. Peter's Square or lead a special Mass for artists marking the Catholic Church's Jubilee Year.
Since 2023, he has had persistent health problems and has difficulty moving.
