(Patria) - Scottish fans have once again shown why many consider them among the most passionate, but also the most cheerful football supporters in the world.
During the first days of the World Cup in the United States, thousands of members of the famous Tartan Army occupied Boston, turning the city into a large fan zone filled with songs, flags, and – huge amounts of beer.
After Scotland's 1-0 victory over Haiti, celebrations continued across the city. Scottish fans filled restaurants, pubs, and squares for days, and many then organized a trip to the Boston Red Sox baseball game at the legendary Fenway Park.
Breweries left without supplies
American media report that alcohol consumption reached levels rarely seen even during the biggest holidays in the USA.
The famous Boston brewery Samuel Adams announced that their central brewery was completely out of stock of the renowned "Boston Lager" after Scottish fans drank quantities in just a few days that far exceed sales during Independence Day on July 4th.
The situation was so serious that owners had to organize emergency additional deliveries just to continue operations.
Similar scenes were recorded at one of Boston's most famous establishments, Hennessy's bar, where they claim they have never experienced anything like it in more than three decades of business.
"We've been in business for over 30 years and we've never seen a weekend like this. Sales were three times higher than on St. Patrick's Day, which is traditionally our busiest day of the year. By Sunday evening, we were out of every beer," said bar director Noel Somers.
New wave of fans arriving soon
Hospitality businesses in Boston are now quickly preparing for a new wave of fans, as Scotland faces Morocco in their second group match on Friday.
Local authorities and restaurant owners have received recommendations to double their supplies of drinks and food, aware that thousands of Scottish fans could once again flood the city.
If the first days of the World Cup are any indication, Boston will look more like Glasgow than one of America's largest cities in the coming days.
