(Patria) - Demonstrators throwing stones in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi clashed with police on Sunday after being prevented from reaching the US consulate during protests over the killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah by Israel, Reuters reported.
The demonstrators chanted "Death to America" while carrying Nasrallah posters. Police said seven of its officers were injured and were being treated in hospital.
"Police had to resort to batons and tear gas against those who broke through the cordons in an attempt to disperse the crowd," said Deputy Inspector General of Police Asad Raza, adding that the demonstrators tried to reach an area outside the cordons previously agreed with the organizers.
He said police would file criminal charges against the demonstrators who were violent.
The pro-Iranian Shiite religious political party Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen organized the gathering of about 3,000 people in the country's most populous city.
