Sheep and shepherds flood Madrid streets

(Patria) - Instead of the usual hustle and bustle and car horns, the streets of Madrid yesterday could be heard bleating of sheep, bells, and the voices of shepherds who led their flocks through the city center, following ancient paths along which animals have moved for centuries to the southern pastures.

This custom was revived in 1994 as part of the celebration of Madrid's Fiesta de la Trashumancia, when animals and shepherds were allowed to move along traditional routes, which were also recognized by the Spanish parliament.

The flocks are moving from the direction of northern Spain towards the southern pastures which serve them for winter grazing, reports Hina.

Hundreds of years ago, this route passed through untouched nature, but in the meantime, cities have sprung up in these places, including the capital of Spain.

The year before last, the sheep walk was canceled due to the pandemic.

After passing through quiet landscapes on Sunday, the shepherds, many dressed in traditional folk costumes, had to pass through the busiest parts of the city, such as one of Madrid's main squares - Puerta del Sol.

Locals and tourists stood along the route, taking pictures of the sheep and colorfully dressed shepherds.

Children and adults, accustomed to the traffic bustle on the city streets, enjoyed being able to get close to the animals.

- I really didn't expect this in the city, in the capital. It reminds me of my village - said student Ana Sar from the vicinity of Mallorca.

- It's incredible - said Dutch tourist Sandra Van Arkelem, saying she enjoyed the sight.
