Father of arrested BiH student in Turkey hopes for more information on his son by Monday

GRADAČAC, (Patria) - The father of student Selmir Mašetović, arrested last week in Turkey, told the Patria agency that he might have more details about his son by Monday, who is in custody in the western Turkish province of Uşak.

“My son was arrested on May 22. I haven't spoken to him since,” said Huso Mešetović, desperate that his son's five-year stay in Turkey ended in a bad way. He adds that he is in contact with the BiH consulate in Turkey, which is helping him as much as possible within their capabilities, but that they are quite limited.

“We are still in uncertainty, we don't know how Selmir is in custody, we don't know what he is being accused of, we don't know how all this will end,” says the frightened father.

Turkish security forces arrested the BiH student from Gradačac on suspicion of being a member of Fethullah Gülen's movement.

Huso Mešetović says that his son was not in Turkey at the time of the military coup, but at home in Gradačac.

“He cannot be anyone's enemy. After all, if he had done something against Turkey, would he dare to go there again? And he just returned to Turkey at the end of May to finish his remaining exams,” adds the father. He says that Salmir graduated from Behram-beg Madrasa in Tuzla, after which he went to study psychology in Turkey on a scholarship. He has been devoted to science his whole life, not politics.

Turkish authorities also arrested a BiH student in 2016 on suspicion of having ties to the FETO organization, which the authorities there claim is a terrorist organization. Student Samed Nadarević from Cazin was acquitted of all charges.
