(Patria) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is safe after what the FBI called an assassination attempt on Sunday outside Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Law enforcement officials said at a press conference that they arrested a suspect whom U.S. Secret Service agents spotted with an AK-47 style assault rifle outside Trump's National Golf Course. Secret Service agents fired, and the suspect fled in a black SUV.
World media report that the identity of the suspect in the assassination attempt on American presidential candidate Donald Trump is known, and it is Ryan Wesley Routh.
"The FBI responded in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is investigating what appears to be an assassination attempt on former President Trump," the agency said in a statement, Reuters reported.
Trump's campaign staff had previously announced that he was safe after the shooting, but did not provide details. Trump sent an email to his fundraising list saying there was "a shooting near me, but before rumors start to get out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!" according to an email seen by Reuters.
Trump was injured in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on July 13, which raised questions about candidate protection months before the election to be held on November 5, where he will face Kamala Harris.
The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident and were relieved to learn he was safe.
"Violence has no place in America," Harris said in a post on social media X.
The Washington Post reports that Trump was playing golf when the incident occurred. Secret Service agents took him to a holding room at the club, it said, citing two people familiar with the event.
The first shooting of a U.S. president or major party presidential candidate in more than four decades was an apparent security lapse that forced Kimberly Cheatle to resign as Secret Service director under pressure from a bipartisan Congress.
