Attack Plan Foiled During Paris Olympic Games

(Patria) - French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced yesterday that an attack plan targeting football matches during the Summer Olympic Games in Paris has been foiled.

In a statement, Darmanin said that members of the General Directorate for Internal Security arrested an 18-year-old from Chechnya on May 22, suspected of planning attacks on matches in Saint-Étienne.

According to investigation information, he was preparing an attack on the "Geoffroy-Guichard" stadium in Saint-Étienne, where several football matches will be played during the Olympic Games.

The plan was to attack spectators and police forces, the statement said, adding that the suspect wanted to "die and become a martyr" in the attacks.

The Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11. Before the final in Paris, football matches will be played in stadiums across France.
