
SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Radovan Karadžić, a convicted war criminal, was arrested 11 years ago today.
After a decade in hiding, the most wanted Hague fugitive was arrested on July 21st after months of surveillance.
At the time of his arrest, Karadžić claimed to be "Doctor Dragan Dabić". He had been on the run since July 24, 1995.
His trial began in 2009.
He was sentenced to 40 years in prison by the first-instance verdict.
Radovan Karadžić was finally sentenced to life imprisonment in The Hague on March 21, 2019.
He was found guilty of persecution from the territory that Bosnian Serbs considered their own, sniper attacks and shelling of Sarajevo, taking UNPROFOR members hostage, and genocide in Srebrenica.
He was acquitted of the charge related to genocide in seven municipalities in 1992. He was also acquitted of such charges in the first-instance proceedings.
