The Association of Translators in Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose members are translators from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, considers the untrue statements regarding the lack of a sufficient number of qualified English translators who could translate Bosnia and Herzegovina's answers to the European Commission's questionnaire to be insulting, the Association of Translators in Bosnia and Herzegovina stated.
The European Commission delivered a questionnaire with more than 3,200 questions to Bosnia and Herzegovina in December 2016, and whether BiH will get candidate status for EU membership depends on the answers received from Sarajevo.
State Prime Minister Denis Zvizdić announced last Thursday that BiH could submit the answers to the European Commission's questionnaire in Croatian and thus solve the problem that has allegedly arisen with translation into English. Croatian is one of the official languages of the European Commission. However, a reaction from the Association of Translators in BiH followed soon after.
- Bosnia and Herzegovina has more than enough experienced and excellent English translators who are capable of doing a quality translation of the answers within a reasonable timeframe, pace, and with good coordination from the competent institution. There is no real need to seek help from neighboring countries – the Association stated in a sharp reaction.
- The calculation clearly shows: 25,000 pages (1,800 characters with spaces is a translation unit, not a page): 60-day deadline = 417 pages per day : 5 pages (daily translation norm) = 84 translators per day. The Association of Translators can provide a list of over a hundred verified, experienced, and high-quality Bosnian-Herzegovinian English translators who can do this job at any time – the Association's reaction further states, NAP reports.
