Cryptocurrency Company Founder Sam Bankman-Fried Agrees to Extradition to the US

(Patria) - Sam Bankman-Fried may be ready to come to the US to face criminal charges related to the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, after appearing in court in the Bahamas.

Bankman-Fried's lawyer said on Monday that the disgraced FTX founder has agreed to be extradited to the United States. The court hearing was adjourned earlier in the day when his lawyers said it was too soon to appear in court, AFP reports.

Jerone Roberts, Bankman-Fried's local defense attorney, told The New York Times that lawyers would prepare the necessary documentation for his extradition. "Mr. Bankman-Fried wants to do right by his clients, and that has led to his decision," Roberts told reporters, as quoted by the Times.

It is unclear when the extradition might take place. The court appearance came just a week after Bankman-Fried's lawyers initially said they planned to fight extradition. The extradition hearing was scheduled for February 8.

A Case That Shook the US

Bahamian authorities arrested Bankman-Fried last Monday at the request of the US government. US prosecutors allege he played a central role in the rapid collapse of FTX and that he hid the company's problems from the public and investors. The Securities and Exchange Commission stated that Bankman-Fried illegally used investor funds to purchase real estate in his name and the names of his family members. The 30-year-old could spend the rest of his life in prison.

When he returns to the US, Bankman-Fried's lawyer will be able to request his release on bail. A judge in the Bahamas denied Bankman-Fried's bail request last week, stating that he might flee.

Bankman-Fried was worth tens of billions of dollars – at least on paper – and managed to attract celebrities like athlete Tom Brady or former politicians like Tony Blair and Bill Clinton to his conferences at luxury resorts in the Bahamas. One prominent Silicon Valley firm, Sequoia Capital, invested hundreds of millions of dollars in FTX.

FTX's new CEO, John Ray III, told a congressional committee on Tuesday that there was nothing sophisticated about what Bankman-Fried intended.

"This is just old-fashioned embezzlement, taking money from others and using it for your own purposes," he said.

The case of the young cryptocurrency expert has served US Republicans to criticize Democrats. According to their claims, Bankman-Fried donated tens of millions of dollars to US Democratic campaigns. Therefore, the trial of this young man could open important political questions, critics aligned with US Republicans have previously assessed.
