Orban: Trump's victory would force Europe to reconsider support for Ukraine

(Patria) - Europe will have to reconsider its support for Ukraine if Donald Trump becomes US President, as the continent will not be able to bear the burden of the war alone, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said yesterday.

Orban opposes military aid to Ukraine and has clearly stated that he believes Trump shares his views and would negotiate a peace settlement for Ukraine.

Orban supports former President, Republican Trump in the race against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the US presidential election.

- We (in Europe) must realize that if America gets a president who is for peace, which I not only believe, but also read from the numbers, if what we expect happens and America is for peace, then Europe cannot remain pro-war - says Orban.

Ukraine will be high on the agenda at the meeting of European leaders in Budapest this week, Orban said, referring to the European Political Community meeting and a more informal meeting of EU leaders.

- Europe cannot bear the burden (of war) alone, and if the Americans switch to peace, then we too must adapt, and we will discuss this in Budapest - emphasizes Orban.

Europe is concerned about how the outcome of the US elections will affect the war in Ukraine and the security of the continent. Orban has angered Brussels with his close ties to Russia and his opposition to aid for Ukraine.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in July that the Hungarian government believes Trump is a "chance for peace" in Ukraine.

Orban said in July that his team is helping Trump's associates with migration policies.

The Hungarian Prime Minister called Trump on Thursday to wish him good luck in tomorrow's elections.
