Orban accuses EU of wanting to overthrow his government and install a 'puppet government'

(Patria) - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused the European Commission of trying to overthrow his government and install a "puppet government", comparing his opposition to the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.

Orban, who faces the most serious threat in his 14-year rule after an opposition party with a new leader surged in the polls, addressed supporters on the anniversary of the rebellion against Soviet domination, which was crushed by the Red Army.

Orban points out that his sovereign policies related to Ukraine and migrants are unacceptable to Brussels.

- We know they want to push us into the war in Ukraine, they want to impose migrant quotas on us and hand over our children to gender activists. We know they also have a puppet government in mind, a party they want to impose on us - Orban said, alluding to the Tisza party of opposition leader Peter Magyar.

He accuses Magyar of "calling on foreigners to help him against Hungarians".

The European Commission did not respond to Reuters for comment.

According to the latest poll conducted in the first half of October, the moderate center-right Tisza party enjoys the support of 42 percent of decided voters, and Fidesz 40 percent.

When looking at the entire electorate, Fidesz leads with 29 percent support, followed by Tisza with 26 percent.

The next elections in Hungary will be held in early 2026.
