Indictment against Muharem Dunić for fighting in Syria and Iraq

SARAJevo, (Patria) - A prosecutor from the Terrorism Department of the BiH Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment against Muharem Dunić, born in 1974 in Jajce, a citizen of BiH. The accused Muharem Dunić (1974) is accused of participating in battlefields in Syria and Iraq within formations that operated as part of the so-called "ISIL".

The accused is charged that, during 2014, together with his wife, he left the territory of Austria, traveled to Turkey, from where he illegally crossed the border into Syria, where he joined paramilitary formations operating within the structures of the so-called "ISIL", which was declared a terrorist organization by a UN Security Council decision.

The investigation established that the accused participated in war activities that constitute grave breaches of international humanitarian law, with the aim of forming the caliphate of the so-called "Islamic State" in the territory of two war-torn countries.

After the defeat of the so-called "ISIL" structures, the accused was captured by Kurdish forces in Syria in early 2019, and extradited to BiH at the end of 2019, where he was deprived of his liberty and is currently in custody.

The accused is charged with committing the criminal offense of illegal formation and joining foreign paramilitary or paramilitary police formations from Article 162b of the Criminal Code of BiH.

The indictment has been forwarded to the BiH Court for confirmation.
