'Oppenheimer' absolute winner of the 96th Academy Awards

(Patria) - "Oppenheimer" is the best achievement of the 96th Academy Awards. Out of 13 nominations, the story of the creator of the atomic bomb won seven golden statuettes, including Christopher Nolan for directing and Cillian Murphy for best actor.

The film "Poor Things" won four, and Emma Stone her second Oscar, reports RSE.

Martin Scorsese's film "Killers of the Flower Moon", despite ten nominations, did not win any awards, while "Barbie" took home only one Oscar - for best song.

Cillian Murphy, who played physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, said at the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, that he was "overjoyed" to have won.

- We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, for better or for worse. We all live in Oppenheimer's world, so I would like to dedicate this to all the peacemakers - said Murphy, who is the first Irish-born actor to win an Oscar for best actor.

Robert Downey Jr. received the award for best supporting actor for his role as U.S. government official Lewis Strauss in "Oppenheimer".

- Films are just over 100 years old, we don't know where this incredible journey is going, but to know that you think I am a significant part of it - means a lot to me - said director Christopher Nolan, who finally won his first Oscar.

"Oppenheimer" also won awards for best editing, original score, and cinematography. However, it lost in several other technical categories, which prevented it from achieving a record number of wins.

Instead, the unusual film "Poor Things" won golden statuettes for best production design, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, as well as for best actress - Emma Stone.

Yorgos Lanthimos' film is the story of a newborn whose brain is implanted in the body of an adult woman, who then embarks on an adventure of discovering the world.

- I am so honored to be able to share this with every cast member, every crew member, every person who poured love and brilliance into the making of this film - said Stone.

"Barbie", the highest-grossing film of 2023, won only one of the eight awards for which it was nominated - best original song, for the track "What Was I Made For?", by Billie Eilish.

- Thank you so much to the Academy, I wasn't expecting this, I feel so incredibly happy and honored - said Eilish.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph won the award for best supporting actress for her role as a school cook struggling with the death of her son in "The Holdovers".

- I've wanted to be different for so long. Now I realize I just needed to be myself and thank you for seeing me - said Da'Vine Joy Randolph.

"The Zone of Interest" won the award for best sound and became the first British film to win the award for best international feature film.

The Holocaust drama follows a German family living near the Auschwitz concentration camp.

In his speech, director Jonathan Glazer criticized Israel and the war in Gaza.

- Our film shows where dehumanization leads in its worst form. It has shaped all our past and present. We stand here as people who deny their Jewishness and the Holocaust, which have been hijacked by an occupation that has led to conflict for numerous innocent people - said Glazer.

The film "20 Days in Mariupol" was declared the best documentary. Director Mstislav Chernov told the audience that he was "honored" to become the first Ukrainian Oscar winner.

- I am probably the first director on this stage to say that I wish I had never made this film - he said, adding that he wished Russia had not attacked his country, causing thousands of deaths and the near destruction of many Ukrainian cities.

On the other hand, "Anatomy of a Fall" won the award for best original screenplay. The film's director and co-writer Justine Triet joked that the Oscar would "help her with her midlife crisis".

The film is about a woman accused of murdering her husband, with her visually impaired son as the sole witness.

"American Fiction" won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

The Japanese animated film "The Boy and the Heron", by the renowned Studio Ghibli and the even more famous director Hayao Miyazaki, won in the best animated feature category.

The Oscar ceremony was hosted for the fourth time by Jimmy Kimmel. Recalling the strikes that halted Hollywood's work, Kimmel acknowledged the efforts made to reach a fair deal for actors and screenwriters.

He joked that actors can now stop worrying about "being replaced by artificial intelligence, and worry more about being replaced by younger, more attractive people."
