Six people were killed on Saturday in avalanches in the Swiss Alps, police said, as experts warn of a significant risk of further avalanches across the mountain range. Nine ski mountaineers were moving along an unmarked trail at an altitude of 2,200 metres towards the summit of Vilan, on the border with Austria, when an avalanche was triggered and buried the entire group.
The bodies of three mountaineers were found in the snow, and rescuers transported four seriously injured skiers to hospitals, where one succumbed to his injuries.
Police did not disclose the victims' identities. Two more people were killed in separate avalanche accidents in Muerren and Adelboden.
