Deadly Dangerous: This is the New Route Syrian Refugees Might Take to Europe

The EU-Turkey agreement on resolving the migrant crisis came into effect today, and migrants arriving in Greece from now on will be returned to Turkey unless they apply for asylum in Greece, writes Patria.

The agreement has not yet been fully implemented in practice, as experts, around 2,300 of them, including translators, lawyers, and other specialists, are yet to arrive in Greece.

Turkey has committed to accepting refugees from Greece, and in return will receive billions of convertible marks from the EU. Also, negotiations regarding Turkey's accession to the European Union will be accelerated. For every migrant returned from Greece to Turkey, the EU will admit one Syrian refugee.

Although the agreement is intended to curb the refugee wave and primarily increase the safety of refugees, there are also those who criticize the agreement between Turkey and the EU. Some critics suggest that the refugee wave will not be curbed, but that refugees will turn to new routes after the agreement, through which they will try to reach Europe, and which are much more dangerous than those they have used so far.

One of the possible new refugee routes is from North Africa to Sicily. This route is already known as a human trafficking route, and it is very dangerous. The sea claims hundreds of lives every year of those trying to reach Europe via Italy.

Critics of the agreement between Turkey and the EU claim that the agreement has pushed refugees into even greater danger.

Hundreds of people have lost their lives in one year while attempting to cross from Syria to Europe, writes Patria.
