Storm rages in Turkey, eight dead in floods

At least eight people have died, and many more have been rescued from wind and floods caused by the storm that has been ongoing in Turkey since Sunday. The stormy southwest wind, called Lodos, hit areas along the Marmara, Aegean, Black, and Mediterranean Seas, tore off roofs, and forced people to flee the floods, reports the Patria News Agency.

In the northwestern province of Edirne, Turkish Thrace, near the border with Greece, the Meric and Tunca rivers flooded and cut off the town of Karaagac, with its five thousand inhabitants. Military vehicles and helicopters were sent to evacuate residents, and the governor of Edirne, Dursun Ali Sahin, described the flood as a disaster of the century.

There is no information about casualties so far, but Sahin warns that the situation could worsen and that water levels will continue to rise.
