Easier entry for non-EU workers seeking jobs in Germany

(Patria) - A new visa scheme for skilled workers from outside the EU, allowing them to enter the country and seek employment for up to a year, provided certain criteria are met, came into effect in Germany today.

The new scheme, known as the chance card for job seekers, is available to those with at least two years of vocational training or a university degree recognized in the country where the qualification was obtained. Knowledge of German or English is also required.

Whether applicants meet the requirements for such a visa is determined based on language skills, professional experience, age, and ties to Germany, reports RSE.

Once the card is approved, the applicant can enter Germany and look for a job for up to a year, meaning they no longer need to have a contract with a German company before they can enter Germany to work.

The new scheme has been introduced with the aim of reducing bureaucracy and shortening procedures.

"We are ensuring that workers and skilled workers who have been urgently needed by our economy for years can come to our country," said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

The new scheme is part of a comprehensive package of laws aimed at addressing the acute shortage of skilled labor in Germany.

The first phase began in November 2023 and mainly involved facilitating the path to a residence permit known as the EU Blue Card, and concerned recognized skilled workers.

As of today, opportunities have also been expanded for job seekers from Western Balkan countries, including unskilled workers.

However, a contract with a German company is still required for this as a prerequisite for entering Germany to work.
