(Patria) - Top US and Israeli generals held talks at the Pentagon on Friday amid rising tensions with Iran, two US officials told Reuters on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The officials offered no details about the closed-door talks between US General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Eyal Zamir, chief of staff of the Israeli armed forces. The meeting had not previously been reported.
The United States has bolstered its naval presence and increased its air defenses in the Middle East after President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened Iran, seeking to force it to the negotiating table.
Iran's leadership warned on Sunday of a regional conflict if the United States attacked it.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz met with Zamir on Sunday after talks in Washington, Katz's office said, to discuss the situation in the region and the Israeli military's "operational readiness" for any possible scenario.
