Sabrin Mečević (28), residing in Maglaj, was apprehended on April 7th this year at the Brod Border Crossing, when Border Police officers, during a specialized inspection of the vehicle he was driving, discovered a special compartment and a hiding place containing 5 automatic rifles, four of which were AK 47 Kalashnikovs, 4 pistols of various makes and calibers, and about 400 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, magazine pouches, and other equipment, writes Patria.
According to the collected evidence, the aforementioned weapons and ammunition were being smuggled from Bosnia and Herzegovina towards Croatia and further towards the Netherlands. Also, during the search of the suspect, approximately 3 grams of the narcotic drug known as "speed" were found, so he is also charged with unauthorized trafficking of narcotic drugs.
Three months before this arrest of Mečević for arms smuggling, media reports that the three-member Mečević family from Bijela Ploča, after a fire in mid-December, were left homeless, passed almost unnoticed. It was reported that Sabrin and his wife Amra Mečević lost their family home in just ten minutes. They received a one-time aid of 400 KM from the Municipality of Maglaj, but that did not solve their problems.
It was stated that they are unemployed and have a four-year-old son.
The circle has paradoxically closed. From calls to kind people to help the family, everything ended with a criminal attempt to smuggle weapons, writes Patria.
