(Patria) - Heavy rains that hit the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro this weekend killed at least eleven people, the state fire department said, Reuters reported.
The rains flooded streets, the capital's metro line and people's homes, toppling trees and causing landslides.
Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes declared a state of emergency, while the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva offered federal support.
Firefighters are still searching for a woman who went missing after her vehicle fell into a river.
