(Patria) - The death toll from heavy rains that have hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul in recent days has risen to one hundred, local civil protection announced yesterday, adding that 128 people are still missing.
The storms have caused floods that have destroyed bridges and buildings, turned streets into rivers, and displaced more than 163,000 people in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's southernmost state bordering Uruguay and Argentina.
Brazil's National Center for Natural Disasters announced on Tuesday that the southern part of the state is at "high risk" of new floods on Wednesday.
It was stated that the rainfall is expected to resume. Although significant amounts of rain are not expected, water levels are already high in many places, and the ground is saturated with water.
The MetSul meteorological station reported that the region could face "very large floods of serious proportions".
