US President Barack Obama expressed hope that next week will bring healing of divisions among Democrats, now that Hillary Clinton has secured victory in the race for the party's nomination and entry into the battle for the White House with Republican Donald Trump, reports the Patria News Agency.,
"I hope that in the coming weeks we will all pull together," stated President Obama as a guest on NBC television's "The Tonight Show" with host Jimmy Fallon, which will be broadcast on Thursday.
This was the US President's first public appearance after Hillary Clinton defeated Bernie Sanders in a months-long, exhausting, and fierce battle for the Democratic candidate's spot in the presidential elections to be held on November 8.
"What happens in a primary campaign can sometimes be a little painful," said Obama, highlighting Bernie Sanders' significant role in the fight with Clinton.
"He pushed the party and presented a real challenge. He brought a huge dose of energy and new ideas to the campaign. I think he made Hillary a better candidate," said the US President.
Although her victory is certain, the candidacy of the former Secretary of State in Barack Obama's first presidential term still needs to be confirmed by Democratic delegates at the convention in Philadelphia in July.
Appearing on the highly-watched show was an excellent opportunity for the current president to send a message to the most likely Republican candidate, the eccentric billionaire Donald Trump, whom he touched upon when answering a question about his role in the presidential campaign.
"My main role in this process is to remind the American people what a serious job this is. The President is not a character from a reality TV show," concluded Obama, alluding to Trump's past involvement in one such entertainment TV format, writes Index.
