New Severe Weather Hits Slovenia, Aid Arriving from Brussels

(Patria) - New severe weather hit Slovenia on Sunday afternoon and is moving towards the southeast of the country, announced the environmental agency ARSO.

“New severe weather hit Slovenia, starting from Gornje Posočje and reaching Poljanska Valley, Žiri, and Polhograjski hribovje. The storm with heavy showers, during which strong gusts of wind and hail are also possible, is moving towards the southeast,” ARSO announced.

The traffic information center stated that due to severe weather and hail, drivers are not recommended to travel on the Brezovica – Vrhnika route.

The website Neurje.si warned that the heaviest problems will be caused by downpours due to the large number of active landslides.

To the town of Črna na Koroškem, which was completely cut off after the storm two days ago, the authorities have managed to establish an emergency gravel road, which off-road and emergency vehicles can access. Evacuations and emergency care will be carried out along this route, announced the STA agency, citing the government information office.

However, some parts of Črna na Koroškem are inaccessible from other parts of the town. In the morning, the river still flowed through the center of the town. There are still problems with electricity, water, and mobile signal supply.

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob, who visited Škofja Loka, said that Slovenia has activated the European civil protection mechanism and has also requested assistance from neighboring countries.

He thanked the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a phone call for all the help provided to Slovenia facing devastating floods.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Tanja Fajon said that according to announcements from Brussels, von der Leyen is expected to visit Slovenia next week.
