New Commander of the Ukrainian Army Calls for a Change in Warfare Methods

(Patria) - In his first address since being appointed head of the Ukrainian armed forces, Lieutenant General Oleksandr Syrskyi said the country must change and improve its warfare methods if it is to counter the Russian invasion.

Syrskyi stated in a post on Telegram that "clear and detailed planning of actions by all military administration bodies" is necessary, and also addressed the need for modern weapons from Ukraine's Western partners, reports Radio Slobodna Evropa.

"Only changes and continuous improvement of the means and methods of warfare will allow us to achieve success on this path," he wrote in the post.

He added that warfare requires new technical solutions, including drone systems and electronic warfare equipment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday appointed Syrskyi, who took over as head of the armed forces from Valerii Zaluzhnyi. Earlier that day, Zelenskyy awarded Zaluzhnyi the title of "Hero of Ukraine" at a ceremony in Kyiv.

The change in the armed forces' leadership comes at a crucial moment for Ukraine, which has not managed to recapture significant territory previously occupied by Russia since the end of 2022.

Kyiv is also now facing a potential cutoff in military aid from the US, its largest supporter, as Republican lawmakers block a $60 billion aid package due to demands for deep changes in US border policy.

With Russian forces on the offensive along the front line and making gradual advances into the eastern city of Avdiivka, which Moscow has been trying to capture for months, Zelenskyy said in February that the army needed a "reset".

After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Syrskyi led the successful counter-offensive of the Ukrainian armed forces to regain control of the Kharkiv region in September of that year.

Polls had previously shown Zaluzhnyi's popularity in the country to be as high, if not higher, than Zelenskyy's. Some experts had suggested that if Zelenskyy were to dismiss Zaluzhnyi, it would demoralize some Ukrainian soldiers and undermine national unity.
