The third participant in the World Cup quarter-finals is the Russian team, which defeated Spain after penalties. After 90 minutes and extra time, the score was 1:1, and the hosts celebrated in the penalty shootout with 4:2. Akinfeev saved two penalties.
The match started excellently for the Spaniards, as they took the lead in the 12th minute when Ignashevich put the ball into his own net after an Asensio free-kick.
After the goal, the team from the Iberian Peninsula began to control the game, while the Russians gradually relaxed. The hosts equalized in the 41st minute. Dzyuba scored from a penalty after Pique handled the ball.
In the second half, the hosts set up a bunker in front of their goal, and the Russian defenses at Luzhniki Stadium held until the penalties.
The Spaniards had complete control of the match, maintained possession, and made 800 more accurate passes, but they did not create serious chances in front of Akinfeev's goal.
In the 85th minute, substitutes Aspas and Iniesta could have changed the score, but Akinfeev was in position.
The extra time was practically a copy of the second half: fruitless attacks by Spain and a good defense by Russia.
Finally, the match went to a penalty shootout. The first miss was seen in the third round, Koke's penalty was saved by Akinfeev, and Golovin was accurate for 3:2. The fourth round saw goals on both sides. In the fifth round, Aspas missed again, and the hosts' hero became goalkeeper Akinfeev, who once again saved a penalty kick.
Russia will play the winner of the match between Croatia and Denmark in the quarter-finals.
