Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Maria Corina Machado, symbol of resistance against authorities in Venezuela

(Patria) - The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to María Corina Machado from Venezuela.

For two decades, María Corina Machado has been the most recognizable face of the Venezuelan opposition and a symbol of the fight against Nicolás Maduro's regime. This 57-year-old engineer, former member of the National Assembly, and leader of the liberal movement Vente Venezuela, is known for her relentless criticism of the authoritarian government and her calls for the restoration of democracy in a country ravaged by corruption, inflation, and political persecution.

In the early 2000s, Machado founded the organization Súmate, which fought for fair elections and transparency, making her a frequent target of the authorities. In January 2024, as presidential elections approached, Venezuela's Supreme Court, controlled by Maduro, disqualified her from politics for 15 years, preventing her from running. Reuters and the BBC report that Machado then appointed professor Corina Yoris as her replacement on the opposition's list.

Despite the ban, Machado continued to speak publicly, gathering supporters across Venezuela. In January 2025, she was arrested after a speech in Caracas, and witnesses claimed her convoy was attacked. According to the BBC, she was soon released, while the authorities denied that any arrest had occurred.

CNN and Reuters state that the international community, including the European Union and the United States, considers Machado a key figure of the democratic opposition. She has received numerous international awards, including the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought (2024) and the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize.

For many Venezuelans, María Corina Machado remains a symbol of courage, civil resistance, and hope that the country, after years of authoritarian rule, will once again find its way towards freedom and political change.
