New York Mayor Strongly Opposed Maduro's Arrest in Talk with Trump

(Patria) - New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed yesterday that he called US President Donald Trump to express his strong opposition to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

- I called the President and spoke with him directly to express my opposition to this act and to make it clear that this opposition is based on opposing the pursuit of regime change, and the violation of federal and international law - Mamdani told reporters during a press conference in Brooklyn.

The White House has not yet commented on his call, CNN reported.

Mamdani, who is only in his third day in office, previously called the US operation to arrest Maduro and his wife an "act of war".

He emphasized that he believes both federal and international laws have been violated.

- I expressed my opposition. I made that clear and that's where we left it - the mayor added, without revealing details of Trump's response.

Maduro is expected to be held in custody in New York, where he faces federal charges.

Mamdani said he was informed of the arrest by his first deputy and New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

While he did not provide further details about Maduro's arrival, he stressed that city services are working to ensure minimal disruption for the citizens of New York.
