German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck: Elon Musk wants a weak Europe

(Patria) - American billionaire Elon Musk's support for the far-right German Alternative for Germany (AfD) is a "logical and systematic" play for a weak Europe that will not be able to regulate so strongly, Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck said in his New Year's address, Reuters reported.

Musk's calls are not made out of ignorance, said Habeck, who is the Green Party's chancellor candidate in the German national elections in February.

"It is logical and systematic. Musk is strengthening those who weaken Europe. A weak Europe is in the interest of those for whom regulation is an inappropriate limitation of their power," Habeck added.

The German government yesterday accused Musk, who owns the X platform and is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, of trying to influence the upcoming elections with an opinion piece for the newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

Musk supported the AfD as Germany's last hope, in an article for which the opinion editor resigned in protest, praising the anti-establishment and anti-immigrant party's approach and its policies of tax and market deregulation.
